Piraya Film’s GULABI GANG, directed by Nishtha Jain, picked up the Award for Best Film in the Muhr AsiaAfrica Documentary section of the 9th Dubai International Film Festival.

Director Nishtha Jain received the award at the Closing Ceremony on December 16th, 2012.

”- It pleases me greatly that we have won in Dubai, first and foremost because it enables us to spread the message about Gulabi Gang, and thus inspire people all over the world”, says producer Torstein Grude.

“We made this film to highlight the extraordinary movement that Gulabi Gang is. I have been deeply impressed by what they have accomplished in India, where they are fighting against repression of women and suppression within the caste system. It is awesome to see how a few people can mobilize hundreds of thousands of women to stand up and fight for their basic rights. The film has now been at three festivals and has won the main prize at two of these. It’s incredibly inspiring to receive this recognition, and we now see that this means a lot in terms of the attention we receive from TV channels. ”

Muhr Awards were created in 2006 to honor filmmakers in the Arab region. In 2007, Muhr Awards expanded to also apply to filmmakers from Asia and Africa. Since GULABI GANG director Nishtha Jain is from India, the film could compete for the esteemed Muhr AsiaAfrica awards.

The 9th Dubai International Film Festival was arranged December 9-16, 2012. A total of 60 films in 43 different languages were screened at the festival.
